Riga itinerary

7 days in Riga: a one-week itinerary

A week based in Riga can combine five city days with two very different rail or coach trips. This itinerary keeps one hotel, separates the coast from the Gauja landscapes and leaves enough city time for museums, neighbourhoods and Latvia’s open-air museum.

How this seven-day route works

The first three days build Riga from the historic centre outwards. Jūrmala then provides a low-complexity coastal day, while Sigulda needs more structured movement. The final two days return to the wider city.

Keep the two day trips movable. Weather, rail works, event days and museum opening patterns are better reasons to change the order than the day numbers printed here.

One hotel

Stay in Riga for the full week to avoid packing and to preserve flexibility around the day trips.

Two different excursions

Jūrmala is a relaxed coastal day; Sigulda combines landscapes, castles and local movement.

Five city layers

Old Town, the market and river, Art Nouveau, the left bank and the open-air museum each receive their own focus.

Before you start

Fix only the essential bookings

Check the major museums and any ticketed event, but keep day-trip order flexible until transport and weather are clear.

Use live rail and city planners

Vivi covers train planning; Rīgas satiksme covers the city legs. Check Sigulda’s local bus separately.

Pack for outdoor days

The coast, Gauja landscape and open-air museum all need suitable footwear and a weather alternative.

Protect the return journey

Choose the return connection before extending a day trip into another beach area, trail or castle stop.

Day 1

Old Town and the boulevards

Morning

Town Hall Square and Vecrīga

Begin around the House of the Black Heads, Riga Cathedral and the medieval lanes. Choose one interior.

Afternoon

St Peter’s and the civic centre

Use St Peter’s for a tower view or choose another major Old Town interior, then leave through the boulevard parks.

Late day

Freedom Monument and parks

Follow the green belt past the Freedom Monument and opera area, finishing in the Centre.

Day 2

Central Market, history and the Daugava

Morning

Central Market

Browse several pavilions for produce, rye bread, fish and prepared food.

Midday

Spīķeri and the riverfront

Walk through the warehouse quarter to the open Daugava promenade.

Afternoon

Museum of the Occupation of Latvia

Give the main exhibition focused time and leave another large history museum for a different day.

Day 3

Latvian art and Art Nouveau

Morning

Latvian National Museum of Art

Use the national collection for context before walking the surrounding parks and boulevards.

Afternoon

Alberta iela and the Quiet Centre

Explore the façades, then add the Riga Art Nouveau Centre for a period interior.

Evening

A slower Centre evening

Choose a café, concert or dinner close to the day’s final streets rather than crossing the city again.

Day 4

Jūrmala coast day

Jūrmala stretches along the coast and has several rail stops. Choose the station for the area you want instead of treating the city as one point on the timetable.

Morning

Train from Riga to the chosen Jūrmala area

Use the current Vivi timetable and Jūrmala’s official arrival guide. Majori is a practical central reference, not the only useful stop.

Midday

Beach and resort streets

Combine the coast with nearby wooden architecture and a relaxed lunch. Allow the season and weather to set the pace.

Afternoon

Continue locally or turn back

Extend to another area only when the station and return plan remain simple. Do not build the day around an unnecessary sequence of stops.

Day 5

Sigulda and Turaida

Sigulda is the more demanding excursion because the station, castle areas, valley routes and Turaida are not one compact stop. Decide on local movement before leaving Riga.

Morning

Riga to Sigulda and the castle area

Use the current train or coach information, then begin with the town and castle-quarter side of the valley.

Midday

Choose a landscape route

Add a viewpoint or manageable walk that fits the weather, footwear and remaining daylight.

Afternoon

Turaida Museum Reserve

Use the local bus or another planned connection for Turaida’s castle, cultural landscape and museum reserve.

Return

Protect the Riga connection

Work backwards from a suitable return rather than adding a final attraction without a transport margin.

Day 6

Āgenskalns and the left bank

Morning

Cross the Daugava

Use public transport or a suitable walking route to see the centre from the left-bank side.

Midday

Āgenskalns Market

Explore the restored market and use it for lunch or a food-hall stop.

Afternoon

Residential Āgenskalns

Walk a short circuit through the surrounding streets for wooden architecture and a calmer neighbourhood scale.

Evening

Return without retracing the week

Take a current public-transport route back to the Centre and keep the evening open.

Day 7

Latvia’s open-air museum

The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum provides a rural and regional counterpoint to the city week. Its historic buildings and grounds need a substantial block, suitable weather and practical footwear.

Morning

Travel to Lake Jugla

Use the current Rīgas satiksme planner for the museum entrance rather than relying on a saved route number.

Main visit

Farmsteads, crafts and regional buildings

Follow the museum map through examples from Latvia’s regions. Seasonal demonstrations and events vary, so treat them as additions rather than guarantees.

Late day

Return for a flexible final evening

Use the last evening for a favourite central area, a concert or a museum missed because of weekly closures.

Poor-weather alternative

When the outdoor museum would be uncomfortable, keep Day 7 in central Riga for missed museums, cafés and a shorter park walk.

How to adjust the week

Move Jūrmala for the best coastal conditions

It is the easiest day trip to exchange with a city day.

Keep Sigulda structured

Confirm the intercity and local legs before deciding which valley or castle stops fit.

Use museum closing days intelligently

Swap the first three city days rather than removing a major stop from the route.

Reduce outdoor load in winter

Shorten the coast and open-air blocks, then add museums, concerts or cafés in Riga.

Where to stay for seven days

Use one Riga base for the full week. The Centre or boulevard belt balances Old Town, Central Station, museums and quieter nights. Staying beside the station can simplify both day trips, while Old Town gives atmosphere but may add noise, cobbles and a longer walk to some departures.

Seven-day Riga questions

Is seven days too long to stay in Riga?

Not when the week includes Jūrmala, Sigulda and the wider city. Travellers interested only in Old Town highlights should choose the three-day itinerary instead.

Do I need to change hotels for the day trips?

No. Both excursions can use Riga as the base, which also lets you move them when weather or transport changes.

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

No. The route is designed around walking, Riga public transport, trains and coaches, although Sigulda requires more careful local planning.

Which day should I keep flexible?

Keep Jūrmala and the open-air museum movable because their outdoor value depends most on conditions. Confirm museum closing days before assigning the first three city days.
